There are increased air services to Sri Lanka from Europe, the Middle East and Asia and there are many competitive air fares available. On paper, Sri Lanka has two airports however almost all airlines fly into Bandaranaike International Airport just north of Colombo. From the USA many of the flights connect through Asia from the West Coast or through the Middle East or India from the East Coast.

There are two weather patterns in Sri Lanka and there are two monsoon seasons. The South-western region is best between December and March with the rainy season between May and September whereas the North and Eastern regions of the country meaning it is rainy during October-January and dry between May and September. The climate in Sri Lanka is tropical and temperatures are fairly constant throughout the year with the coastal regions enjoying average temperatures of 25-30 degrees.

Sri Lanka lies almost in the center of the Indian Ocean and has climatic and cultural links with three continents. Formerly called “Ceylon”, Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean in a strategic location near major Indian Ocean sea lanes. The nation has a total area of 65,610 km², with 64,740 km² of land and 870 km² of water. Its coastline is 1,340 km long.

Sri Lanka is home to some amazing animals such as leopards, buffalo and the majestic Indian elephant. The island is also home to a variety of flora and fauna; from mountainous jungle terrain, and scattered green tea plantations, down to expansive sandy beaches.

As you would image, spices play a big part in the local dishes. Curry and rice is a must try that will include many flavours and accompaniments from sambols to hoppers. Do be careful as they do tend to be on the hot side! Due to the location the island also offers a wide assortment of seafood and tropical fruits from pineapple to mangosteen. Tea is also the drink of choice as well as delicious fresh fruit juices.
