Surrounded on all sides by the shimmering Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a stone’s throw from India; separated only by the diminutive Palka Strait. Just north of the equator, the island is scene to a variety of flora and fauna; from mountainous jungle terrain, and scattered green tea plantations, down to expansive sandy beaches which are perfect for any given afternoon of relaxing and reflecting on all that this majestic country can offer. The highest peaks can be found in the island’s interior and, naturally, the climate in this region is altogether cooler than on the coast so the intrepid explorer will need to dress accordingly.
Sri Lanka was a British Colony until as recently as 1972, when the name of Ceylon was formally dropped and the country once more returned to embrace its unique and varied culture. This unique fusion, of British colonialism and colourful Sri Lankan culture, can still be experienced today, with the central highlands possessing many of the architectural reminders of the colonial era. In addition, spectacular ruins such as Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya, can all be found to the north and are not to be missed.
There is a huge amount of amazing wildlife native to the country to see and get up close to in any one of the many national parks such as Yala and Willpattu. Here you will be able to meet some of Sri Lanka’s more famous residents, such as leopards, buffalo and the majestic Indian elephant. With variety and culture around every corner, Sri Lanka is the perfect destination to explore and discover. The convenient location of luxurious, boutique hotels ensures that – when you are not immersing yourself in all that this wonderful culture has to offer – you can relax and unwind in the surrounds of pure paradise.
