Sauna in a Giant Golden Egg - Off the Map Travel

Guests visiting Kiruna, northern Sweden, will land the golden goose. At no additional cost to your Arctic adventure you will be treated to FREE use of the Solar Egg sauna giving you a once in a lifetime chance to sauna in an iconic structure in the wilderness.

The new golden Solar Egg can accommodate up to 8 people and is warmed by a heart-shaped wood stove sitting at its center. The Egg, is fitted with solar panels to power its lights. It stands at five metres high and four metres wide, the exterior is made from 69 gold-plated stainless-steel panels which reflect the city and surrounding countryside. Now located at Riksbyggen (Luossavaara) the Solar Egg will move around the Kiruna region where it will be temporarily placed in stunning Arctic environments, so that visitors and locals can experience the best views, and environments the region offers. The sauna will travel to a new home on the banks of a lake in Nikkaluokta, in the mountains just outside Kiruna, later this summer from July to September.

The project has been created by Riksbyggen to commemorate the start of Kiruna’s urban transformation project. The stunning public sauna art installation has been designed and created by prizewinning artistic duo Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström.

The egg shape symbolises rebirth and new opportunities at the start of Kiruna’s urban transformation, a project that involves the relocation of entire city districts in response to ground subsidence caused by decades of iron ore mining.
