Copenhagen has long been celebrated for its beautiful architecture, exceptional restaurants and effortlessly stylish Scandinavian lifestyle. This December, the Danish capital welcomes an extraordinary new attraction that brings together design, wellbeing and the city’s enduring relationship with water.

Opening on 5 December 2026, KAI Water Culture House is set to become one of Copenhagen’s most remarkable architectural landmarks, offering a new way to enjoy the city’s waterfront throughout the seasons.

A spectacular new addition to Copenhagen’s waterfront

Located on Papirøen, also known as Paper Island, in the heart of Copenhagen Harbour, KAI is far more than a traditional swimming pool.

Designed by internationally acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and his practice, Kengo Kuma & Associates, this extraordinary 5,800 square metre development combines ten indoor and outdoor swimming pools, wellness facilities and cultural spaces.

The building itself is a work of art. Five striking brick towers rise above a glass-fronted structure, creating an unusual silhouette along the harbour. Approximately 300,000 handmade bricks have been used in its construction, with carefully positioned windows allowing natural daylight to filter through the interiors.

The combination of Japanese architectural influences and Scandinavian simplicity makes KAI a fascinating addition to Copenhagen’s celebrated design scene.

Swimming beneath Copenhagen’s open skies

One of KAI’s most extraordinary features is the Valley Pool, an outdoor swimming pool positioned between the building’s five brick towers.

Here, you can swim beneath the open sky while surrounded by dramatic architecture, experiencing the changing Nordic seasons from the warmth of the water.

Another highlight is the outdoor onsen pool, inspired by Japanese bathing traditions. Heated to approximately 36°C, this pool offers panoramic views across Copenhagen Harbour, making it an inviting place to relax even during the colder winter months.

Inside, visitors will discover a 25 metre swimming pool, teaching pool, children’s pools and a selection of wellness facilities designed for relaxation.

With three saunas, a steam bath, heated stone, therapeutic pool and hot and cold plunge pools, KAI embraces the Nordic tradition of alternating temperatures to create a restorative bathing experience.

Where Japanese bathing traditions meet Nordic wellbeing

Across the Nordic countries, bathing, saunas and cold water swimming have long been part of everyday life.

KAI celebrates this relationship with water, introducing Japanese bathing influences to Copenhagen’s established swimming culture.

The contrast between warm water and crisp winter air is particularly appealing in December, when Copenhagen’s shorter days and illuminated waterfront create a wonderful atmosphere.

KAI also incorporates cultural spaces and activities, encouraging visitors to experience the building beyond its swimming facilities.

Its harbourfront location will eventually provide direct access to designated outdoor swimming areas, with the harbour bathing facilities expected to open in early 2027.

The perfect addition to a luxury Copenhagen city break

For those visiting Copenhagen this winter, KAI offers something genuinely different to add to a city itinerary.

Spend the morning discovering Copenhagen’s historic streets, independent boutiques and exceptional architecture, before enjoying a leisurely afternoon swimming and relaxing overlooking the harbour.

December is an especially atmospheric time to visit, with festive decorations, seasonal markets, candlelit restaurants and welcoming cafés creating a memorable winter city break.

Combine a visit to KAI with a privately guided architectural tour, exceptional Nordic dining and accommodation at one of Copenhagen’s beautiful luxury hotels.
