The Faroe Islands at a Glance

The Faroe Islands is an archipelago of 18 mountains located halfway between Iceland and Scotland in the North Atlantic Ocean.

One of the most breathtaking aspects of this destination is the surrounding nature. Whether you are sailing between fjords or hiking through mountains you will be greeted with some spectacular vistas that even those with no photography experience would fail to capture something exceptional regardless of the season or the weather. Green valleys, steep mountains, picturesque villages and the vast North Atlantic Ocean; a journey here will give you the sense of being somewhere truly unique.

Tórshavn

Tórshavn, on Streymoy Island, is the capital city of the Faroe Islands. It’s known for its old town, Tinganes, crammed with wooden turf-roofed houses on a small peninsula. The name Faroe Islands first appeared as Faereyjar (in approximately 1225), which means “Sheep Islands”. This presumably led to the national symbol, which is a ram. This name was given by the Viking age settlers from Norway in the ninth century.

There is so much to see and do in Tórshavn itself; from visiting the Tórshavn Cathedral which is the second oldest church on the islands or perhaps the Mikkeller Tórshavn; a 500-year old wooden house featuring some of the best beers! This is all in addition to exploring the unique landscape with hikes, visiting local families, horse riding or even helicopter rides!

Mykines

Mykines is the westernmost of the 18 main islands of the Faroese Archipelago.

Enjoy tremendous views of the ocean to the west and other islands to the east as you walk across the island dubbed the “paradise of birds” because of its magnificent and rich bird life, including hundreds of cute puffins nestled in burrows in the clifftops during the summer months.

Visiting Mykines offers many adventures; hiking along the coastline, crossing the Mykines bridge, visiting the Mykines Holmur Lighthouse. With only 14 permanent inhabitants on the island you will feel as though you have truly visited somewhere untouched!
