A word from our travel specialist

On my latest trip to Norway, some of the best moments were spent out on the fjords.

I did a cruise from Bergen through the Osterfjord and into the narrow Mostraumen straits. The landscape was dramatic, with towering cliffs and waterfalls, and at one point the boat got close enough that I felt the mist on my face. I also went on a cruise through the Nærøyfjord, which was absolutely stunning. It’s so narrow and steep, with little villages in the valley and waterfalls everywhere. The boats were modern and comfortable, and I loved standing out on the top deck even when the wind picked up. Another highlight was sailing on the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. I found a quiet spot by the big windows inside, but also went out on the sun deck to take in the huge, peaceful landscape.

The Guidebook

Explore Fjord Norway

Sculpted and carved by ancient glaciers, the Norwegian Fjords are a collection of geological masterpieces. Sheer cliff faces and deep, sea flooded valleys wrapped in wild rugged terrain set the stage for an adventurers’ paradise. In addition there are a whole host of incredible places to stay such as lighthouses, boutique hotels and lodges.

Begin your adventure in the official “Gateway to the Fjords”, Bergen, where you can experience some of the areas most popular tourist attractions such as the Norway in a Nutshell tour by train, land and sea, or for something a little less mainstream you could head to the nearby charming Art Nouveau town of Alesund where a host of tours can be arranged privately such as chocolate tasting, helicopter rides and hiking.

A must whilst visiting Fjord Norway is to witness Geirangerfjord – the UNESCO listed jewel of Fjord Norway and quite possibly the country’s most iconic place of natural beauty.

Getting There

Bergen is an excellent hub for the Fjord Norway region offering great flight connections to the world. In addition to a large selection of direct flights to Bergen from all over the world, you can also arrive by ferry or cruise, by train from Oslo or Flåm or by car along the scenic fjords and coast to Bergen. There are also a number of other domestic airports which are well serviced through connections in the immediate region, Oslo and elsewhere in Norway.

Climate

The climate in Fjord Norway weather is warmer than the latitude might suggest. Temperatures below -10 degrees Celsius are rare. Summer temperatures sometimes reach the upper 20’s, but the city sees temperatures over 30 degrees only a few days each decade.

Fjords

Fjords are found in locations where current or past glaciation extended below current sea level. A fjord is formed when a glacier retreats, after carving its typical U-shaped valley, and the sea fills the resulting valley floor.

This forms a narrow, steep sided inlet (in Norway, sometimes deeper than 1300 metres) connected to the sea. The terminal moraine pushed down the valley by the glacier is left underwater at the fjord’s entrance, causing the water at the neck of the fjord to be shallower than the main body of the fjord behind it.
