Discover Iceland’s Geothermal Spa Experiences

Iceland Lagoons and Natural Spas
Iceland is famous for its geothermal activity, and one of the most memorable ways to experience this natural power is by visiting the country’s lagoons and natural spas. Heated by underground volcanic energy, these geothermal pools are filled with mineral rich water that stays warm throughout the year. Bathing in these natural hot springs has been part of Icelandic culture for centuries and remains one of the most relaxing and unique experiences for visitors exploring the island.
From luxurious spa complexes with panoramic views to natural pools hidden within dramatic landscapes, Iceland offers a wide variety of geothermal bathing experiences. Many of the country’s most famous lagoons are located near popular travel routes such as the Golden Circle or close to Reykjavik, making them easily accessible for travellers. Others are found in quieter regions of the country, offering peaceful settings surrounded by mountains, fjords and volcanic terrain.
Whether you are seeking a luxury spa retreat or a traditional geothermal bathing experience, Iceland’s lagoons provide the perfect opportunity to relax while surrounded by some of the most striking scenery in the world. Below are some of the most impressive geothermal lagoons and natural spas in Iceland.

Laugarás Lagoon
Laugarás Lagoon is one of Iceland’s newest geothermal spa destinations and a welcome addition to the Golden Circle region. Located in the small village of Laugarás beside the Hvítá River, the lagoon offers a peaceful setting surrounded by countryside and mountains.
The spa features tiered geothermal pools that overlook the river, allowing visitors to relax in warm mineral rich water while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A distinctive cascading waterfall flows between the pools, adding a unique visual feature that enhances the tranquil atmosphere.
Water temperatures remain around 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, making the lagoon comfortable for bathing throughout the year. Facilities include saunas, cold plunge pools and relaxation areas designed to complement Iceland’s traditional spa culture. With its scenic riverside location and modern design, Laugarás Lagoon is quickly becoming one of the most appealing geothermal spa experiences along the Golden Circle.

Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is the most famous geothermal spa in Iceland and one of the country’s most iconic attractions. Located on the Reykjanes Peninsula between Reykjavik and Keflavik International Airport, the lagoon is known for its vivid blue water and dramatic setting among black lava fields.
The geothermal water in the lagoon is rich in minerals including silica and algae, which give the water its distinctive colour and are believed to provide skin nourishing benefits. The temperature remains between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius throughout the year, allowing visitors to enjoy the lagoon even during the colder winter months.
Guests can relax in the warm water while enjoying silica mud masks, steam rooms and in water bars. The spa also offers premium facilities, luxury treatments and high quality dining. As one of the most recognised geothermal spas in the world, the Blue Lagoon remains a must visit experience for travellers exploring Iceland.

Sky Lagoon
Sky Lagoon is a modern geothermal spa located just outside Reykjavik along Iceland’s rugged Atlantic coastline. Since opening, it has quickly become one of the most popular spa experiences in Iceland thanks to its spectacular ocean views and contemporary design.
The lagoon features an infinity edge that blends seamlessly with the horizon of the North Atlantic Ocean, creating a striking visual effect. Guests can soak in the warm geothermal water while watching the sunset or, during winter, the northern lights.
One of the highlights of Sky Lagoon is the traditional Icelandic spa ritual which includes a cold plunge pool, sauna with panoramic ocean views, steam bath and body scrub. Inspired by Icelandic bathing traditions and natural landscapes, Sky Lagoon offers a peaceful and immersive geothermal spa experience close to Reykjavik.

Secret Lagoon
The Secret Lagoon, officially known as Gamla Laugin, is located in the village of Fludir in South Iceland along the popular Golden Circle route. It is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland and dates back to 1891.
Unlike some of the larger spa resorts, the Secret Lagoon maintains a simple and authentic atmosphere. The natural pool is surrounded by small geothermal vents and bubbling hot springs, with steam rising gently from the ground.
The water temperature remains between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius, creating a relaxing environment for visitors after a day exploring nearby attractions such as Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area. For travellers seeking a more traditional Icelandic hot spring experience, the Secret Lagoon offers both history and natural beauty.
What an amazing trip we are having. It is incredible. Many many thanks for arranging such an incredible trip.
My family and I traveled to Sweden to see The Northern Lights in March of 2023. From the planning process to every detail of the trip, I could not have been more pleased with our experience. Alex was exceptional to work with. His guidance on the time of year, where to stay, activities to do and how to get to and from everything was spot on. I have never used a tour company before but thought a trip of this kind would be easier with some help. I am so glad that I did. The entire week was seamless and completely stress-free, allowing us to truly enjoy Sweden and our time together as a family. I will be recommending Off The Map travel to friends and family and will certainly be using them myself again in the future.
We really enjoyed our Norwegian adventure despite the -22 days! Unfortunately no real experience of viewing the Lights but we did capture a couple of images on our last night – too much cloud otherwise so lots of snow. We really enjoyed the husky lodge – not at all what we had tentatively imagined. Thanks for your assistance, maybe next time we will see the Lights in all their glory.
Hello Lucy!! Kim and I had a fantastic time in Iceland! Probably one of my top 3 trips I’ve ever taken!
It was everything we asked for and you did a wonderful job coordinating it all so beautifully!!
Thank you very much and we will contact you again when we get ready to plan our trip to Norway and Lapland!
We originally hired Off the Map Travel in 2020 to set up a trip to see the Northern Lights. That didn’t happen, thanks to COVID. But, we persisted and in March of 2023, we took a 16-day trip that included both Iceland and Norway. IT WAS MAGICAL! Off the Map took care of everything! We were pampered at every stage of our trip. The people they hired and the activities they planned added up to a trip that will set the standard for any we’ll ever take in the future. Alex and his team were fabulous! We recommend them without restraint!
Arctic Retreat was simply magical. Graham and his team were superb. Their entire focus was on ensuring we had an outstanding experience. The accommodation, setting and food were all excellent. The team, experienced professionals, each brought their own personal touch and local nuance. It was faultless. The dog sledging trip directly from Arctic Retreat was also superb. We would return to Arctic Retreat in a heartbeat.
Off the Map Travel was great! Alex helped us plan the most amazing 10 day honeymoon to Iceland. He gave us great recommendations and was so patient with us during the planning process!
We have loved it so much here that we have extended our stay and will come back to Bjornfjell and stay in one of their cabins until Jan 3 then we are staying in the igloo hotel the night of the 3rd. 😊We added a few excursions this week – we did the whale trip on the RIB boat (wow!), toured the igloo hotel (which is why we decided to book the last night!) and did the reindeer sleigh at Sorrisniva. You were so right, the bonfire excursion was incredible!!It has been an absolutely amazing trip!
I used OTMT to organise a holiday to see the Northern Lights for my partner’s 50th birthday. They took the time to understand my priorities, the kinds of places we like to stay and the things we like to do. They recommended a fabulous itinerary in Norway centred around the Lyngen Experience Lodge. The holiday itself lived up to expectations and I have no hesitation in recommending OTMT. They listened carefully during the planning and delivered the perfect present for my partner.
The best travel experience ever on every level you can think of during a Lapland expedition (food, activities, timings, accommodation, transport, service, equipment…). I highly recommend Off The Map Travel for their outstanding level of professionalism and detail oriented mindset!
We – the whole family – loved the whole journey!!
The accommodations, the activities and especially the great people – thank you very much for this fantastic organisation !!!
We did! Everything was truly wonderful! I think the Holman Husky Lodge was our favourite place. Beautiful accommodations, but best of all, wonderful people! Everyone was so friendly and accommodating, excellent food, we really enjoyed our time there. We also greatly enjoyed Bergen! Opus XVI was beautiful and we loved being able to walk to restaurants and bars and take in the sights. All of our drivers were punctual and friendly. The itinerary was full but not overfull.
Thank you so much! It was an epic trip, we are taking home wonderful memories!
