Drive the Fjords in Norway

The approach to Ålesund gives you a little glimpse of what lies ahead: from the window of your aircraft, you’ll see the crystal clear fjords and jagged peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, the site of your coming adventure!

You will take a transfer from the Airport to the beautiful Art Nouveau town of Alesund to check in to Hotel Brosundet. Once settled, you will board a boat and head out into the fjords to Flatflesa lighthouse. Enjoy a delicious lunch in the lighthouse and make use of the jacuzzi and sauna before heading back to Brosundet for dinner in Apotekergata No.5 and overnight at Brosundet.

This morning, check out and make your way to Hotel Storfjord. Your driver will welcome you and transfer you directly, where you will enjoy a welcome cocktail for you at the Lavvu, a traditional Sami tent erected deep in the pine forests surrounding the hotel. Here you will have the chance to take in your surroundings and receive an explanation of some of the highlights of the trip ahead. Rest of the evening at leisure to relax. Why not head to the spa for some relaxation?

After breakfast this morning your journey will begin! Drive North toward the Atlantic Ocean Road. Your car will be packed with a delicious Storfjord Picnic basket complete with local produce, cheeses, meats, berries and champagne. As you head north you will come to the overpass. This dramatic overpass is a marvel of engineering as your car seems to fly over the Atlantic as you wind from island to island. The scenery is breathtaking and you will enjoy a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy your picnic. On the return journey, your view will be of the Sunnmore peaks littering the horizon. This will be your playground for the next few days as your adventure goes deeper into the fjords!

Head out to the mountains of Romsdal today. The first stop at the Troll Wall is the perfect place to stop and enjoy pastries packed by the kitchen as you gaze up at the highest wall of rock in Europe. Moving deep into the mountains the Trollstigen will appear showing the winding road to the summit. This is one of the most magnificent vantage points in Norway Descend the Valdal valley which will lead you back to the Fjord. A ferry to Stranda will give you a glimpse of things to come as the fjords get narrower and deeper. Be sure to stop at the viewpoint between the tunnels to stare directly into the gaping chasm of the Geiranger Fjord. The destination: Union Øye. A historic royal oasis at the end of the valley. Check-in and enjoy a delicious dinner before relaxing in the evening.

After a royal night’s rest and delicious local breakfast, the quiet roads wind toward the west as the fjords seem to be left behind you. Before long you will trace the coastline towards Stryn, the perfect opportunity for lunch and a journey up the Gondola for incredible views out to the North Atlantic. As you head further inland the fjord hamlet of Geiranger will edge nearer. Board the ferry, sit back and enjoy the slow steam through the grandest fjord of them all with waterfalls cascading off of the mountain tops. Disembark at Hellesylt and drive on through to Union Oye.

A visit to the Sunnmøre region would not be complete without celebrating the incredible seafood that has been the backbone of the region for generations. An island off of the west coast celebrates the vibrant oceans and a 5-course menu is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow today. The return journey skirts the Storfjord as you arrive back for a celebratory final meal amongst friends.

On your final morning, you will trade tyres for wings and take to the skies for an aerial tour of the roads you have been driving on the days before. This trip will give you an incredibly immersive experience as the helicopters weave in and out of the fjords and buzz over idyllic mountain peaks. A driver will be ready to take you to Ålesund Vigra Airport when you are ready for your departure from this magical place.
