Why I’d Choose the Nordics Every Time as a Travel Expert and Mum

As a Nordic travel specialist with nearly 20 years in the industry, and a mum to a lively three year old boy with a second son on the way, I look at holidays very differently than I did a decade ago. Before children, I chased adventure for the sake of it. I have travelled extensively around the world, from long haul beach destinations to fast paced city breaks and far flung bucket list trips. Now, I still want the magic and the wow moments, but I also want calm. I want safety. I want ease. I want a holiday that feels special without feeling stressful. That is exactly why, if I were choosing a family trip, I would choose the Nordics.

The first reason is simple. The Nordics work. Flights are efficient. Airports are organised. Roads are well maintained. People speak excellent English. Standards are high. Timings are reliable. When you are travelling with children, reliability is not boring, it is priceless. You can be standing in the Arctic Circle watching the Northern Lights shimmer across the sky, knowing you are in one of the safest regions in the world. That balance of raw wilderness and exceptional infrastructure is incredibly rare.

Secondly, the experiences are extraordinary without being chaotic. Dog sledding through silent forests. Meeting reindeer herders and learning about Sámi culture. Snowmobiling across frozen lakes. Skiing in beautifully maintained, uncrowded resorts. Sleeping in a glass cabin with snow falling quietly outside. It feels adventurous. It feels different. But it is structured, guided and safe. You are not navigating unpredictable systems or overwhelming crowds. Everything is run with quiet efficiency. As a mum, that matters more than ever.

Another reason I would choose the Nordics over other destinations is the pace. So many family holidays try to cram too much in. Theme parks, queues, packed itineraries, constant stimulation. Children return home more exhausted than when they left. In the Nordics, space is part of the experience. Wide open landscapes. Clean air. Time outdoors. Afternoons warming up in a sauna while the children play in the snow. Early evenings watching the sky change colour. There is room to breathe. And that space is not just good for children, it is good for us as parents too. It allows you to slow down, to actually talk, to reconnect without distraction. Children thrive in that environment. They are outside. They are active. They are experiencing nature in a way that feels grounding rather than overwhelming.

There is also something quietly powerful about Nordic culture. It values balance, simplicity and time together. You see families out in all weather, babies sleeping outdoors in prams, children learning to ski almost before they can properly run. It shifts your perspective on what is possible.

Now, why book through a specialist rather than piecing it together yourself? Because as mums, we already carry the mental load. We are the planners, the calendar holders, the contingency managers. On holiday, you deserve to step out of that role. When you book with a Nordic specialist, your transfers are arranged and monitored. Your accommodation is selected not just because it looks beautiful, but because the room layout works for your family. Your activities are timed properly for daylight hours and realistic energy levels. You are advised honestly about winter driving, clothing and conditions. If a flight is delayed or weather shifts plans, someone else fixes it. You do not need to worry whether the snowmobile guide will arrive. You do not need to research which glass cabin truly offers privacy. You do not need to discover too late that the Icehotel rebuild is not yet open at your travel date. Those details are handled.

Having travelled extensively, I can confidently say that very few regions combine adventure, safety, organisation and genuine magic as well as the Nordics do. You can have romance and family time in the same trip. You can have wilderness without discomfort. You can have adventure without anxiety.

For me, as a mum raising two boys who I hope will grow up curious, resilient and connected to the outdoors, the Nordics represent something special. Space. Simplicity. Shared experiences that feel meaningful. It is not just a holiday. It is the kind of trip that stays with you. And when it is planned properly, it is remarkably easy.
