Sleeping next to the glacier
This incredible 5-night, 6-day itinerary gives you the opportunity to explore the southern coastline of Iceland culminating in a one-off experience of a lifetime of sleeping in an igloo-style bedroom frozen into the glacial lagoon of Fjallsárlón. Floating in the summer months, the two isolated rooms will freeze into the ice at a secluded location on the lagoon during winter making this an incredibly exciting winter accommodation. It is accessed by an all-terrain vehicle across the frozen glacier in the winter! Located away from light pollution and with panoramic glass walls and uninterrupted views north, the igloos are designed to increase guests’ chances of experiencing the Northern Lights. Isolated from other tourists in an uninhabited corner of Iceland, the new accommodation is a perfect way to reconnect with nature and the stunning Icelandic snow covered wilderness.
Glacier Lagoon Adventure
Arrive into Reykjavik and head to the rental car desks to collect your vehicle. Drive to Hotel Borg in the heart of the city centre and spend the evening at leisure exploring the city. Depending on your arrival time; if it is earlier in the day, you could spend the afternoon exploring the huge number of museums or points of interest. There are also many amazing restaurants on offer here and we can help with any reservations or pre-bookings if you wish.
Take your rental car and drive to Myrdalsjokull (approx 2.5 hours) taking in the amazing scenery along the southern coastline as you go. Mýrdalsjökull is a glacier in the south of the Icelandic highlands. It is the country’s fourth largest ice cap, covering nearly 600 square kilometres (232 square miles), and its highest peak is almost 1500 meters tall. It is most well-known for sitting atop the notorious and explosive volcano, Katla. After exploring the area; head to Hotel Katla for the evening and overnight.
In the morning you will be collected by your private guide and taken out on a tour to explore the best accessible location on the day – perhaps Hekla Volcano or Landmannalaugar. Upon returning back from your day trip you will then drive to the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon where you can check-in and have an early dinner before heading to Fjallsarlon for a special and unique overnight adventure staying in your igloo boat overlooking the stunning Vatnajokull glacier.
After waking up you can head back to your hotel for breakfast and freshen up for the day to spend it exploring the surrounding areas – here you have diamond beach, and the glacier lagoon to marvel over during the daylight hours. Perhaps take a boat trip out onto the lagoon.
Travel back along the coastal road today stopping at the various viewpoints and natural wonders on the way to Hotel Ranga (approx 3 hours). Relax in the hotel this afternoon before a delicious dinner in the restaurant.
Take your car back to Reykjavik Airport (approx 2 hours) to drop off the rental car before the return flight home. Option to extend your stay if you wish.
