Explore Kilpisjärvi, Finland
Kilpisjärvi is the ultimate destination for travellers seeking authentic Arctic adventure. Nestled in Finland’s far north-western arm, where Finland, Sweden, and Norway converge, Kilpisjärvi offers raw natural beauty, dramatic landscapes, and deep cultural roots. This is where luxury is found in the purity of nature and the richness of experience — from the mystical dance of the Northern Lights to the solitude of untouched fells and frozen lakes.
While Kilpisjärvi is far from city life, it rewards visitors with serenity, unspoilt scenery, and truly intimate encounters with nature — a place where the silence is profound, and the experiences unforgettable.
Getting There
Despite its remote location, Kilpisjärvi is surprisingly accessible. The nearest airports are Kittilä (about 3.5 hours by car) and Tromsø in Norway (approximately 2.5 hours by car). Both airports are well connected with major hubs such as Helsinki and Oslo.
Self-drive is a popular option, allowing travellers to soak in the Arctic landscapes en-route. Alternatively, private transfers or tailored transport can be arranged as part of a fully curated itinerary — ensuring the journey itself becomes part of the adventure.
Arctic Wilderness Escape
Kilpisjärvi is dominated by majestic fell landscapes, including Finland’s highest point, Halti. One of the village’s signature experiences is hiking or snowmobiling to the “Three Country Cairn,” where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet.
The iconic Saana Fell towers over the village and offers breathtaking panoramic views for those who make the climb, whether in summer under the Midnight Sun or in winter’s ethereal twilight.
Nature & Northern Lights
Kilpisjärvi’s remote location makes it one of the best places on earth to witness the Northern Lights, with minimal light pollution and consistently clear Arctic skies from late August to April.
Summer unveils endless daylight, with the Midnight Sun shining from mid-May to late July. During these months, visitors can hike, fish, or simply absorb the serenity of the fells in a world where the sun never sets.
Winter brings pristine snowscapes ideal for snowshoeing, fat biking, skiing, or embarking on exhilarating snowmobile and husky safaris across frozen lakes and mountain plateaus. The purity and silence of Kilpisjärvi create an unmatched Northern wilderness experience.
Culture & Cuisine
Kilpisjärvi offers a window into Sámi culture, with opportunities to learn about the indigenous traditions that have shaped life in the Arctic for centuries. Visit a Sámi reindeer herder, hear stories passed down through generations, and experience the deep respect locals have for this land.
Cuisine here is as pure as the landscape: locally caught Arctic char, reindeer, cloudberries, and wild mushrooms are served fresh and sustainably sourced. Dining often becomes an immersive experience, whether enjoying a fireside meal in a traditional kota or sampling Lappish delicacies in boutique lodges.
Climate
Kilpisjärvi’s climate is defined by its Arctic location. Winters are long, cold, and snowy, with temperatures often dropping to -15°C or lower, perfect for winter sports and Northern Lights hunting. Summers are cool, averaging 10–15°C, but the Midnight Sun transforms the landscape into a vibrant, energising haven for outdoor exploration.
This remote Arctic jewel offers a rare blend of peaceful seclusion, cultural depth, and bold adventure — making Kilpisjärvi a true frontier for those seeking to redefine luxury through experience.
We – the whole family – loved the whole journey!!
The accommodations, the activities and especially the great people – thank you very much for this fantastic organisation !!!
We really enjoyed our Norwegian adventure despite the -22 days! Unfortunately no real experience of viewing the Lights but we did capture a couple of images on our last night – too much cloud otherwise so lots of snow. We really enjoyed the husky lodge – not at all what we had tentatively imagined. Thanks for your assistance, maybe next time we will see the Lights in all their glory.
I would thoroughly recommend this company. Their planning and advice was spot on. Alex responded to my calls and emails very promptly. I will definitely use them again for future trips.
The best travel experience ever on every level you can think of during a Lapland expedition (food, activities, timings, accommodation, transport, service, equipment…). I highly recommend Off The Map Travel for their outstanding level of professionalism and detail oriented mindset!
We have loved it so much here that we have extended our stay and will come back to Bjornfjell and stay in one of their cabins until Jan 3 then we are staying in the igloo hotel the night of the 3rd. 😊We added a few excursions this week – we did the whale trip on the RIB boat (wow!), toured the igloo hotel (which is why we decided to book the last night!) and did the reindeer sleigh at Sorrisniva. You were so right, the bonfire excursion was incredible!!It has been an absolutely amazing trip!
I used OTMT to organise a holiday to see the Northern Lights for my partner’s 50th birthday. They took the time to understand my priorities, the kinds of places we like to stay and the things we like to do. They recommended a fabulous itinerary in Norway centred around the Lyngen Experience Lodge. The holiday itself lived up to expectations and I have no hesitation in recommending OTMT. They listened carefully during the planning and delivered the perfect present for my partner.
Exceptional service throughout the entire planning and booking process – travel agencies don’t get any better than this. A brilliant, seamless experience matched by the holiday experience itself. Would recommend ‘Off the Map Travel’ to anyone considering booking for a Nordic experience ‘par excellence’.
Well-organized trip to Norway and Svalbard with great accommodations and activities. Gwen was communicative and responsive to requests. Highly recommend!
Arctic Retreat was simply magical. Graham and his team were superb. Their entire focus was on ensuring we had an outstanding experience. The accommodation, setting and food were all excellent. The team, experienced professionals, each brought their own personal touch and local nuance. It was faultless. The dog sledging trip directly from Arctic Retreat was also superb. We would return to Arctic Retreat in a heartbeat.
The ease of everything stood out to me. All we had to do was be there at the right time. The dog sledding was the highlight for my daughter and sister. We had the best time! For me, Manshausen was the highlight. We were very lucky and the only guests there for the majority of our stay. The staff was amazing and the food was so delicious. We had moose steak and it was the best meal I’ve ever had.
The cabins were comfortable and we were so lucky to have 2 clear nights where we just sat and watched the northern lights. We were able to get some awesome pictures too.
I appreciate all your time and care with planning our trip! I won’t hesitate to use Off the Map travel for our next adventure.
Amy planned a fantastic trip! Everything was very well-thought out. All transfers went smoothly, accommodations were amazing, great restaurant recommendations and the tours were once-in-a-lifetime, can’t book it yourself off the internet experiences. The guides were all fantastic. Communications were prompt and everything worked exactly the way it was supposed to. What a pleasure! Already working on our next trip.
What an amazing trip we are having. It is incredible. Many many thanks for arranging such an incredible trip.
