What a Family Winter Adventure in Finland looks like: Zoe’s Lapland Experience

I’ve just returned from an unforgettable trip to Finland with my family and even now, I’m still buzzing from it. It’s one of those journeys where every day feels like a highlight, and somehow it still exceeds expectations.

Our itinerary took us across three incredible locations: two nights in Wilderness Inari, two nights in Wilderness Saariselkä, and finishing with two nights in Helsinki. Each stop offered something completely different, but together they created a perfectly balanced family adventure.

Chasing the Northern Lights

Of course, the Aurora Borealis was at the top of our list and we couldn’t quite believe our luck.

We were fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights on all four nights in Lapland. Absolutely incredible. There’s something surreal about watching the sky come alive with colour, especially when you’re standing out in complete silence, surrounded by Arctic wilderness. It’s one of those moments that stops you in your tracks and sharing that as a family made it even more special.

The Magic of the Arctic Wilderness

One of my personal highlights was simply being out on a frozen lake. There’s a stillness and sense of space that’s hard to describe vast, untouched landscapes stretching as far as you can see. It feels incredibly peaceful, almost otherworldly.

The pine forests added to that magic. Not covered, but surrounded by snow, they created these beautiful contrasts of deep green against crisp white, a proper winter wonderland without feeling overdone or artificial.

Authentic Encounters with Reindeer

Meeting the reindeer was another standout experience. It felt genuinely authentic, not staged or rushed and it was clear how well cared for the animals are. Learning about the Sámi culture and the role reindeer play in their way of life added a deeper layer to the experience, especially for the children.

A Moment of Pure Relaxation

After days out in the cold, one of the most memorable moments was something much simpler: sitting in the outdoor hot tub at Wilderness Saariselkä.

Being surrounded by snow while soaking in the warm water, under the Arctic sky, was just perfect. It’s those contrasts, hot and cold, stillness and adventure, that make Lapland so unique.

Travelling as a Family

What really made this trip special was experiencing it together as a family. Every activity, every landscape, every shared moment it all adds up to something much bigger.

The accommodations played a huge role in that too. Each place we stayed felt personal, warm, and genuinely attentive. It never felt like just another hotel stay, more like being welcomed into a space designed for exactly this kind of experience.

Ending in Helsinki

Finishing in Helsinki was the perfect way to round off the trip. After the wilderness, the city offered a different pace, great food, beautiful design, and a chance to reflect on everything we’d experienced.

Already Planning the Next One…

What surprised me most is just how much there is to do as a family in Finland, especially in winter. It’s adventurous without being overwhelming, and every experience feels meaningful.

We’ve only just got back… and we’re already talking about when we can go again.

If you’re considering a winter trip with your family, Finland should be right at the top of your list. And if you want help planning it I’d love to share everything we’ve learned.
