A word from our travel specialist

I usually visit Stockholm two or three times a year. It’s spread across islands, so there’s always water nearby, and I love wandering through the cobbled streets of the old town, Gamla Stan and have a few favourite restaurants there. The museums are excellent, especially the Vasa Museum and Fotografiska, but my favourite is probably Livruskammaren.

It feels like a completely different city depending on the season, and both are amazing in their own way. In summer, the most fun is doing boat trips around the archipelago (and jumping in the water) but no matter the time of year, there’s always something new to enjoy.

Stockholm is the perfect year-round city – making it ideal to take advantage of if you wish to use the city as a stop-over before moving onto further destinations such as Swedish Lapland. Its Winter months can be dark and dreary but at Christmas, the city lights up with many Christmas markets to explore.

The city also holds a lot of history with plenty of places to discover including Gamla Stan, the Royal Canals and the Royal Palace (pictured). Further to that is a plethora of restaurants and bars to discover including the newly opened Herno Gin Bar which is a must for gin lovers!

The Guidebook

Explore Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden’s Capital city, is the perfect city to discover throughout the year. Known as the world’s biggest smallest city it has plenty to offer when it comes to exploring there.

In the winter you can use it as a stopover before heading further north to discover Swedish Lapland and during this season it is perfect to visit the Chrismas markets or head out to do some ice skating at Kungsträdgården and many other locations.

Through further seasons you have a wealth of amazing hikes to choose from both inside and outside of the city or perhaps you might prefer to sample some of the cafes and enjoy an outdoor fika. There are plenty of world heritage sites to discover, always an event or exhibition, and then a wonderful wealth of restaurants to eat at.

Getting Around

Stockholm is served by regular international flights with a number of airlines. Although the city is actually spread across 14 islands, navigating Stockholm is relatively easy.

Climate

Stockholm has a mild climate but is one of the sunniest cities in Europe. In the summer, temperatures can reach up to 25 with 18 hours of daylight around midsummer. The winters bring snowfall and temperatures range from -1 to 2.
