Day 1

Welcome to Reykjavík and Icelandic Flavours

Your Icelandic adventure begins upon arrival at Keflavík International Airport, where the dramatic landscapes of the Land of Fire and Ice immediately set the tone for the incredible journey ahead. After collecting your rental vehicle and making your way towards Reykjavík, enjoy your first introduction to Iceland’s captivating scenery, where volcanic landscapes meet rugged coastlines and colourful towns.

Once settled into the elegant Hótel Reykjavík Saga, perfectly positioned in the heart of the capital, take some time to explore the city’s charming streets and vibrant atmosphere. Reykjavík offers a fascinating blend of modern Nordic design, rich Viking heritage and thriving cultural life. Stroll along the waterfront, admire the striking architecture of Hallgrímskirkja Church or simply soak up the relaxed ambience of the world’s northernmost capital city.

This evening, embark on a memorable Private Reykjavík Food and Wine Tour. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, discover Iceland through its cuisine as you visit a selection of carefully chosen restaurants and eateries. Sample authentic Icelandic specialities, including fresh Arctic char, locally reared lamb and traditional skyr, while learning about the country’s culinary traditions and unique food culture. Expertly paired wines and local beverages enhance the experience, creating an engaging and delicious introduction to Iceland.

After an evening filled with flavours, stories and local insights, return to your hotel and relax before the exciting adventures that await in the days ahead.

Day 2

Descending into the Heart of a Volcano

Today brings one of the most remarkable experiences available anywhere in the world. Leaving Reykjavík behind, travel through Iceland’s volcanic landscape towards Þríhnúkagígur, home to the only accessible dormant magma chamber on Earth. This extraordinary adventure offers a rare opportunity to explore the hidden interior of a volcano and witness the immense geological forces that have shaped Iceland for millennia.

Your journey begins with a scenic hike across a vast lava field covered in vibrant green moss. The surrounding landscape feels wonderfully remote, with sweeping views of ancient volcanic terrain stretching towards the horizon. Upon reaching the crater, prepare for an unforgettable descent into the volcano itself. An open cable lift slowly lowers you 120 metres into the enormous chamber below, revealing walls painted with vivid shades of red, orange, yellow and purple created by mineral rich volcanic rock.

At the base of the chamber, spend time exploring this extraordinary underground world while learning about the volcano’s fascinating geological history. The sheer scale of the cavern is astonishing and offers a truly unique perspective on Iceland’s volcanic origins.

Following your exploration, enjoy a warming bowl of traditional Icelandic meat soup before returning to Reykjavík. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure. You may wish to visit Reykjavík’s museums, browse its boutique shops or enjoy a coffee overlooking the harbour.

Day 3

Silfra Snorkelling and the Golden Circle

Today combines two of Iceland’s most iconic experiences, taking you from the crystal clear waters of Silfra to the geothermal wonders of the famous Golden Circle. After breakfast, travel to Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for both its historical significance and extraordinary geology.

Here, you will experience the unforgettable adventure of snorkelling in Silfra Fissure. Equipped with specialist thermal clothing and a dry suit, enter glacial waters that have been naturally filtered through lava rock for decades. The result is some of the clearest water found anywhere on Earth, with visibility often exceeding 100 metres. As you float peacefully between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, the vivid blue water and dramatic underwater rock formations create an almost dreamlike experience.

Following your snorkelling adventure, continue along the Golden Circle route to the famous Geysir geothermal area. Watch in awe as Strokkur erupts every few minutes, sending a powerful column of steaming water high into the air. The surrounding landscape is equally fascinating, with bubbling pools, steaming vents and colourful mineral deposits revealing the powerful geothermal activity beneath the surface.

To conclude the day, enjoy time at Laugarás Lagoon. Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and overlooking the Hvítá River, this elegant geothermal retreat offers the perfect place to unwind. Relax in warm mineral rich waters while taking in the tranquil surroundings.

This evening, arrive at the stylish Hótel Geysir, located beside one of Iceland’s most famous natural attractions.

Day 4

Snowmobiling Across Langjökull Glacier

Begin your day at the magnificent Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Fed by glacial meltwater from the Langjökull ice cap, the powerful Hvítá River plunges dramatically into a rugged canyon, creating an impressive display of natural force. The surrounding scenery provides a fitting introduction to the day’s adventure.

From Gullfoss, board a specially modified glacier vehicle and venture deep into Iceland’s remote highlands. As you leave the main roads behind, the landscape becomes increasingly wild and untamed, with sweeping views of volcanic terrain, distant mountain ranges and expansive wilderness. The journey itself is an unforgettable experience, offering a glimpse into parts of Iceland rarely seen by visitors.

Upon reaching the Langjökull Glacier base camp, prepare for an exhilarating private snowmobile adventure. After a full safety briefing and equipment fitting, set off across one of Europe’s largest ice caps. The sensation of gliding across the pristine snow while surrounded by endless white landscapes is truly unforgettable. Spectacular panoramic views stretch in every direction, revealing the scale and beauty of Iceland’s interior.

Following your glacier experience, continue south towards Iceland’s dramatic South Coast. As the landscape changes once again, enjoy views of waterfalls, volcanic plains and distant glaciers before arriving at your accommodation.

This evening, settle into the peaceful surroundings of Seljalandsfoss Horizons. These beautifully appointed cottages offer comfort, privacy and stunning natural scenery, providing the perfect base for your South Coast adventures.

Day 5

South Coast Waterfalls and Black Sand Adventures

Today showcases some of the most spectacular scenery along Iceland’s famous South Coast. Begin with a visit to Seljalandsfoss, one of the country’s most photographed waterfalls. Unlike many waterfalls around the world, a pathway allows visitors to walk behind the cascading curtain of water, offering a unique and memorable perspective of this natural wonder.

Continue eastwards to Skógafoss, another of Iceland’s most celebrated waterfalls. Dropping 60 metres from ancient sea cliffs, the waterfall creates a powerful spectacle, often accompanied by vibrant rainbows on sunny days. The surrounding landscape perfectly captures the dramatic beauty for which Iceland is renowned.

In the afternoon, prepare for an exciting private ATV Black Beach Safari. Travelling across vast black volcanic sands, this thrilling excursion takes you beyond the usual tourist routes and into some of the region’s most striking landscapes. Drive across rugged terrain shaped by ancient eruptions and glacial floods while enjoying magnificent views of the coastline and surrounding mountains.

One of the highlights of the excursion is reaching the famous Solheimasandur aircraft wreck. Set against a backdrop of black sand, glaciers and endless skies, this haunting site has become one of Iceland’s most recognisable landmarks. The dramatic scenery offers exceptional photographic opportunities and a true sense of the country’s raw beauty.

Following your adventure, continue to your accommodation where you can relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the South Coast.

Day 6

Icebergs, Glaciers and Diamond Beach

Today’s journey takes you to one of Iceland’s most extraordinary natural attractions, the breathtaking Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Located beneath the vast Vatnajökull ice cap, this spectacular lagoon is filled with floating icebergs that have broken away from the glacier and begun their slow journey towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Upon arrival, board a Zodiac boat for an unforgettable exploration of the lagoon. Unlike larger vessels, these smaller boats can navigate closer to the icebergs, allowing you to appreciate their immense size, intricate shapes and remarkable blue hues. As you glide through the calm waters, keep an eye out for seals that are often spotted swimming amongst the ice.

The immense glacier wall towering above the lagoon serves as a constant reminder of Iceland’s powerful natural forces. The peaceful atmosphere is occasionally interrupted by the dramatic sound of ice calving from the glacier and falling into the water below.

Just across the road lies Diamond Beach, one of Iceland’s most striking coastal landscapes. Here, fragments of ice wash ashore and sparkle against the black volcanic sand like precious gemstones. The contrast between crystal clear ice and dark sand creates a scene unlike anywhere else in the world.

After a day immersed in the beauty of Vatnajökull National Park, return along the scenic South Coast, enjoying more spectacular views before arriving back in Vík.

Day 7

Katla Ice Cave and Iceland's Secret Oasis

This morning begins with an exciting Super Jeep adventure into the rugged landscapes surrounding Kötlujökull Glacier. Travelling across rough terrain inaccessible to standard vehicles, your journey offers spectacular views of Iceland’s volcanic wilderness and glacial landscapes.

Upon reaching the glacier, meet your experienced guide and prepare for a fascinating exploration of the Katla Ice Cave. Equipped with helmets and crampons, step onto the glacier and enter a remarkable world of ice and volcanic ash. The cave’s distinctive appearance, created by layers of black ash trapped within brilliant blue ice, produces a striking contrast found in very few places on Earth.

As you explore the cave, learn about the geological processes that continually shape this unique environment. Every season brings subtle changes to the cave’s appearance, making each visit a truly individual experience.

Later, begin your journey back towards Reykjavík, taking a scenic detour through the beautiful Þjórsárdalur Valley. Here you will discover Gjáin, often described as one of Iceland’s hidden gems. This enchanting oasis features delicate waterfalls, basalt formations, crystal clear streams and vibrant greenery, creating a surprising contrast to the surrounding volcanic landscapes.

The peaceful setting provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy a gentle walk and appreciate a lesser known side of Iceland’s natural beauty.

This evening, return to Reykjavík and check into the historic Hótel Borg, one of the city’s most prestigious addresses.

Day 8

Journey to North Iceland

Today marks the transition from South Iceland to the country’s spectacular northern regions. Depart Reykjavík and set out on a scenic drive through ever changing landscapes, showcasing the remarkable diversity of Iceland’s natural beauty.

Travelling through the Borgarfjörður region, there are opportunities to admire several fascinating natural attractions along the way. The striking Grábrók volcanic crater offers insight into Iceland’s volcanic origins, while the dramatic Kolugljúfur Canyon reveals powerful rivers carving through ancient rock formations.

As the journey continues north, the scenery gradually transforms from rugged lava fields and volcanic landscapes into rolling farmland and broad valleys. Traditional Icelandic farms dot the countryside, while distant mountains create a dramatic backdrop throughout the drive.

This route provides an opportunity to experience Iceland beyond its most famous attractions, offering a glimpse into everyday life in the country’s rural communities. Numerous viewpoints along the way reveal sweeping panoramas that highlight the scale and beauty of the Icelandic landscape.

Arriving in Akureyri, often referred to as the Capital of the North, enjoy time to explore this charming coastal town. Nestled at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, Akureyri is known for its colourful streets, vibrant cultural scene and picturesque harbour.

This evening, settle into your accommodation and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of North Iceland as you prepare for tomorrow’s exploration of the Lake Mývatn region.

Day 9

Geothermal Wonders of Lake Mývatn

Today is dedicated to exploring the extraordinary landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn, one of Iceland’s most geologically active and visually striking regions. Often described as one of the country’s natural treasures, this remarkable area combines volcanic craters, lava formations, geothermal fields and dramatic waterfalls, creating an environment unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Your first stop is the magnificent Goðafoss, known as the Waterfall of the Gods. Here, the glacial waters of the Skjálfandafljót River cascade over a sweeping horseshoe shaped cliff, creating one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. The powerful flow and surrounding scenery make this an unforgettable introduction to the day.

Continue towards Dimmuborgir, an otherworldly landscape of towering lava formations, caves and arches created by ancient volcanic activity. Local folklore associates this fascinating area with trolls and mythical creatures, adding a sense of mystery to the dramatic scenery. Nearby, the impressive Hverfjall crater rises above the landscape, offering panoramic views across the Mývatn region for those wishing to explore further.

Later, visit the geothermal area of Hverir at Námafjall, where bubbling mud pools, steaming vents and brightly coloured mineral deposits reveal the immense energy hidden beneath Iceland’s surface. The sulphur scented landscape feels almost lunar in appearance and provides a striking contrast to the lush wetlands surrounding Lake Mývatn.

After a day immersed in volcanic wonders and dramatic scenery, return to Akureyri for a relaxing evening in the comfort of your accommodation.

Day 10

Whale Watching and the Road West

This morning brings an unforgettable wildlife experience as you venture into the waters of Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, for an exhilarating whale watching excursion. The nutrient rich waters of North Iceland provide ideal feeding grounds for a variety of marine species, making this one of the best whale watching destinations in Europe.

Board a high speed RIB vessel and head out into the fjord in search of some of Iceland’s most impressive marine life. These agile boats allow you to cover greater distances and enjoy closer encounters with wildlife than traditional whale watching vessels. Throughout the excursion, keep watch for humpback whales, minke whales and white beaked dolphins, all of which are regularly sighted in these waters. The dramatic mountain scenery surrounding the fjord provides a spectacular backdrop to the experience.

Following your whale watching adventure, begin the scenic drive west towards the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often referred to as Iceland in Miniature, this remarkable region showcases many of the country’s most iconic landscapes within a relatively compact area. Along the journey, enjoy changing scenery ranging from coastal views and lava fields to mountain ranges and rolling countryside.

Upon arrival, settle into the elegant surroundings of Hótel Búðir. Located within a dramatic lava field overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this renowned countryside retreat offers exceptional comfort and a peaceful atmosphere. The nearby black church of Búðakirkja and stunning coastal views create a memorable setting for your stay on the peninsula.

Day 11

Snæfellsnes Secrets and a Glass Lodge Escape

Today offers a wonderful combination of geological exploration and luxury accommodation in one of Iceland’s most scenic regions. Begin by discovering some of the natural wonders that have made the Snæfellsnes Peninsula one of the country’s most captivating destinations.

A highlight of the day is your guided visit to Vatnshellir Lava Cave, an extraordinary underground world formed by volcanic activity more than 8,000 years ago. Descend beneath the surface via a spiral staircase before entering the ancient lava tube. As you follow the path once travelled by molten rock, your guide will explain the volcanic processes that created this fascinating subterranean landscape. Dramatic rock formations, lava chambers and complete darkness combine to create a memorable and immersive experience.

Beyond the cave, the peninsula offers spectacular coastal scenery, rugged lava fields and views towards the glacier capped Snæfellsjökull volcano, which famously inspired Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The region’s diverse landscapes make every journey a visual delight.

This afternoon, the experience reaches a luxurious conclusion as you check into the remarkable Panorama Glass Lodge. Designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding wilderness, these unique lodges provide uninterrupted views across Iceland’s breathtaking natural landscapes. Floor to ceiling glass walls create a strong connection with nature while maintaining complete comfort and privacy.

As evening falls, relax in your private outdoor hot tub or unwind indoors while watching the changing light across the landscape. This extraordinary accommodation provides one of the most memorable overnight experiences in Iceland.

Day 12

Ocean Hot Springs and a Return to Reykjavík

Enjoy a final morning surrounded by Iceland’s spectacular countryside before beginning the journey back towards Reykjavík. Rather than following the direct route, today’s itinerary takes you through the beautiful Hvalfjörður region, one of West Iceland’s most scenic and often overlooked areas.

The dramatic fjord landscape offers a peaceful contrast to the volcanic and glacial environments explored throughout the journey. Towering mountains rise directly from the water’s edge, while winding roads reveal spectacular viewpoints around every corner.

Your destination is the acclaimed Hvammsvík Hot Springs, a unique geothermal retreat situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike many geothermal bathing experiences in Iceland, Hvammsvík is deeply connected to the surrounding environment. A collection of naturally inspired pools of varying temperatures sits beside the shoreline, where changing tides create a fascinating interaction between geothermal water and the sea.

Spend time relaxing in the warm mineral rich pools while taking in uninterrupted views across the fjord. The tranquil atmosphere and stunning setting make this the perfect place to reflect on your Icelandic adventure. Whether soaking in the warm water or simply enjoying the scenery, the experience provides a memorable conclusion to your time exploring the country’s natural wonders.

Later this afternoon, continue to Reykjavík and check into the elegant Hótel Borg. Located in the heart of the capital, this historic property provides a fitting setting for your final evening in Iceland.

Day 13

Farewell to Iceland

After an unforgettable journey through Iceland’s extraordinary landscapes, your adventure comes to an end today. Enjoy a final breakfast before departing Reykjavík and making your way towards Keflavík International Airport.

The drive to the airport offers one last opportunity to admire the dramatic scenery that has defined your journey. Volcanic lava fields stretch towards the horizon, while distant mountains and rugged coastlines provide a fitting farewell to this remarkable destination.

Over the past thirteen days, you have experienced many of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders. From descending into the heart of a dormant volcano and snorkelling between tectonic plates to snowmobiling across glaciers and exploring ice caves, each day has revealed a different side of this extraordinary country. Along the way, you have witnessed powerful waterfalls, floating icebergs, geothermal landscapes, volcanic coastlines and abundant wildlife, creating a collection of memories that will last a lifetime.

As you return your rental vehicle and prepare for your onward journey, take time to reflect on the unique experiences shared throughout this family adventure. Iceland’s combination of dramatic landscapes, fascinating geology and unforgettable activities creates an experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

Although your journey through the Land of Fire and Ice concludes today, the memories of volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls and geothermal wonders are certain to remain long after your return home.
