My Winter Trip to Levi, Finnish Lapland

If you’ve ever wondered what a winter holiday in Finnish Lapland really feels like, I can honestly say Levi exceeded every expectation I had.

This trip felt like stepping into a completely different world, one filled with snow-covered forests, crisp Arctic air, and experiences that stay with you long after you’ve left.

Arriving in Levi: My First Glass Igloo Stay

From the moment we landed in Kittilä, everything felt effortless. We were transferred straight to the Levi Igloos, where we stayed for the first part of our trip.

I’d seen photos of glass igloos before, but nothing quite prepares you for the real thing. Sitting inside, warm and cosy, while looking out over endless white landscapes, it’s surreal. Waking up to that view each morning was easily one of the most special parts of the trip.

The igloos themselves were amazing, but it was the feeling of being completely immersed in nature that really stood out.

My Favourite Experience: Husky Safari in Lapland

If I had to pick one highlight from the entire trip, it would be the husky safari, without hesitation.

We did a 18 kilometre safari through the forests and frozen terrain around Levi, and it was just incredible. Driving the sled yourself, working with the dogs, and moving through such a quiet, untouched landscape, it’s hard to describe how special it feels.

It’s one of those experiences where you’re completely present. No distractions, just the sound of the sled on snow and the energy of the huskies pulling you forward.

Personally, this is hands down the best winter activity in Lapland.

Food in Levi: A Real Highlight

One thing I didn’t expect was just how good the food would be, but it turned out to be a huge highlight.

We had a beautiful three-course dinner at Restaurant Utsu at Levin Iglut which was a highlight for me. Everything about it, the setting, the atmosphere, and the quality of the dishes, was incredible.

Across the whole trip, the food was consistently amazing. It added a real sense of luxury to the experience and made each day feel that bit more special.

Trying Something Different: Ice Karting

We also tried ice karting, and this ended up being one of the highlights of the trip for me. Racing across a frozen track surrounded by snow was such a thrill and completely different to anything I’d done before. It was fast-paced, fun, and added another layer of adventure to the whole Lapland experience.

Northern Lights by Snowmobile

One evening, we headed out on a snowmobile safari to search for the Northern Lights.

There’s something about being out in the Arctic at night that feels completely unique. The stillness, the darkness, and the sense of anticipation as you look up at the sky all add to the experience.

Although we were not lucky enough to see the Aurora, the trip was more than made up for by everything else we experienced. From the husky safari to the incredible food and the unique places we stayed, it felt like we were constantly discovering the magic Finland has to offer.

Discovering Levi Town

After our stay in the igloos, we moved to Design Hotel Levi, which gave us a chance to experience a different side of the destination.

I absolutely loved Levi town centre. It has a really nice atmosphere, lively but not overwhelming, with plenty of great places to eat and explore. It’s the perfect contrast to the peaceful isolation of the igloos.

Why I’d Recommend Levi to Anyone

Looking back, what made this trip so special was the balance.

You have incredible Arctic experiences like husky safaris, unique accommodation like glass igloos, amazing food throughout, and a fun, welcoming resort town to explore.

It never felt rushed, and every part of the trip offered something different.

Final Thoughts

Personally, this trip to Finnish Lapland will always stand out.

The husky safari was my favourite experience, the igloos were amazing, and the food, especially at Levin Iglut, was a real highlight. Add in the atmosphere of Levi itself, and it’s the kind of place I’d recommend to anyone looking for a truly memorable winter escape.

If you’re thinking about a Lapland holiday, this is exactly the kind of experience you’re hoping for.
