Why Our Local Connections Matter: The People Behind Your Nordic Holiday

There is a big difference between recommending somewhere to stay because it looks beautiful in a brochure and recommending it because you have actually been there, met the owners, eaten in the restaurant and experienced the accommodation for yourself.

At Off The Map Travel, the Nordics are home to our team. We live and work in the destinations where you will spend your holiday, from the cities and coastlines to the forests, mountains and Arctic wilderness.

Our relationships with local hoteliers, chefs, guides and suppliers are built through over 15 years of working together, regular visits and a shared understanding of what makes a holiday special.

And it is these personal connections that make such a difference to the experiences we create for you.

We Know the Places We Recommend

When a new hotel, lodge or private retreat opens in the Nordics, our team makes time to visit.

Of course, we want to see the bedrooms, inspect the facilities and understand what makes the property different. But there is much more to a supplier visit than looking around the accommodation.

We want to know how comfortable the beds are, what the bathrooms are like, whether the rooms have views, how private the cabins feel and what you can expect when you arrive.

We also look at the practical details that can make a significant difference to your holiday.

How far is the nearest restaurant? Can you walk there, or will you need a transfer? How long does it really take to reach the airport? Is there somewhere to enjoy a drink in the evening? How easy is it to arrange activities directly from the accommodation?

These might seem like small details, but they all contribute to a holiday that runs smoothly.

Meeting the People Behind the Experience

One of the most valuable parts of visiting our suppliers is spending time with the people who will be looking after you.

We meet the owners and managers, talk to the chefs, get to know the guides and learn about the people who make each property special.

Sometimes that means sitting down over coffee with a lodge owner to hear about their plans for the coming winter. On another visit, we might spend an afternoon with a local guide, discovering a new experience that could become part of your itinerary.

These conversations help us understand the personalities behind the places we recommend.

They also mean that when we have a particular request, perhaps a special birthday dinner, a private family activity or a carefully planned celebration, we know exactly who to speak to.

There is a real benefit to picking up the telephone and speaking directly to someone we know.

Yes, We Try the Food Too!

Food is such an important part of travelling, and we take our research rather seriously!

During our supplier visits, we try the restaurants, meet the chefs and discover how local ingredients influence their menus.

We want to know what breakfast is like, whether the evening menu changes seasonally, what local specialities are served and how a restaurant caters for different dietary requirements.

In some of our more remote Nordic retreats, where restaurants are not always nearby, the quality and variety of the food available at your accommodation become even more important.

We also look for opportunities that go beyond a traditional restaurant experience. Perhaps a private chef can prepare dinner in your cabin, a local expert can take you foraging through the forest or a meal can be served beside an open fire following a day exploring the wilderness.

By experiencing these things ourselves, we can make informed recommendations rather than relying on a description or a collection of photographs.

From a Supplier Visit to Your Holiday

Imagine our team visiting a secluded lodge in Arctic Sweden.

We spend time exploring the accommodation, checking the distance between the cabins and the main lodge, meeting the chef and discovering where dinner is served.

We speak to the guides about winter activities, find out where the best Northern Lights viewing locations are and check how transfers work during heavy snowfall.

Perhaps we discover a particularly beautiful spot beside a frozen lake where a private outdoor lunch could be arranged, or learn that one of the guides offers an exceptional snowshoeing experience through the surrounding forest.

These are the details that might never appear on a hotel’s website but can make a wonderful addition to your holiday.

When you speak to our team about travelling to this destination, we can tell you what it is really like because we have experienced it ourselves.

Relationships Built on Trust

Our relationships with suppliers are not simply about arranging accommodation and activities.

We work with people who share our approach to hospitality, who understand the importance of attention to detail and who genuinely care about the experiences they provide.

Many of these relationships have developed over years of working together, returning to the same destinations, visiting properties and keeping in regular contact.

That local knowledge is particularly valuable when planning more complex Nordic itineraries, where you might be travelling between remote locations, experiencing changing winter conditions or combining several different destinations.

Because we live and work across the region, our knowledge continues to develop as new hotels open, restaurants change their menus and exciting new experiences become available.

The Difference Is in the Details

For us, creating an exceptional Nordic holiday starts long before you arrive.

It begins with visiting the accommodation, tasting the food, meeting the people and asking the questions that help us understand exactly what your experience will be like.

It means knowing whether a restaurant is a five minute walk away or a twenty minute drive, whether your cabin enjoys complete privacy and which local guide would be best suited to your interests.

Most importantly, it means having genuine relationships with the people who will welcome you when you arrive.

At Off The Map Travel, we don’t just know the Nordics as travel destinations. They are the places we call home, and our local partners are people we know personally.

That is why our local connections matter. Because when we recommend somewhere for your holiday, we want you to feel confident that we know exactly what awaits you.
