Winter Is on Its Way!
There is always a special excitement when the first snow arrives in northern Sweden, and today, 13th October, Boden has had its first snowfall of the season!
For those of us who live and work in the Nordics, this is one of the moments we look forward to every autumn. After months of long summer days, warm autumn colours, foraging in the forests and watching the leaves turn golden, the first snow signals that another wonderful Arctic winter is on its way.
It might only be October, and there is still plenty of time before the deep snow of winter arrives, but that first dusting is enough to get everyone talking. Photographs are shared, messages fly between our team members, and thoughts immediately turn to the winter adventures ahead.
When Snow Arrives, Life Doesn’t Stop
One of the things we love most about living in northern Sweden is how differently the arrival of snow is treated compared with the UK.
Back in Britain, a few centimetres of snow can cause disruption to schools, roads, rail services and airports. In Arctic Sweden, snow is simply part of everyday life, and the infrastructure is designed to cope with months of winter conditions.
Winter tyres are fitted, snowploughs are ready, roads are cleared and everyday life carries on. Of course, exceptionally heavy snowfall can still cause delays, but communities across the north are well prepared for what winter brings.
In fact, rather than bringing everything to a standstill, snow is the beginning of one of the busiest and most exciting seasons of the year.
Tourism comes alive as the snow settles, and the region prepares to welcome visitors from around the world who want to experience everything that makes an Arctic winter so special.
The Start of the Winter Adventure Season
For Off The Map Travel, the first snowfall brings a real sense of anticipation.
Soon, the forests will be covered in thick snow, lakes will begin to freeze, and the familiar sounds of winter will return. Snowmobiles will be heading out along snowy trails, husky teams will be preparing for their first sledding adventures, and snowshoes and cross country skis will replace summer hiking boots.
The first snow is only the beginning, of course. We need consistent freezing temperatures and a good covering of snow before many winter activities can safely begin, but it is an exciting reminder that the season is getting closer.
There is something wonderful about travelling through a snow covered forest on a husky sled, hearing the dogs running ahead and the runners moving over the snow. Or heading out on a snowmobile adventure, stopping beside a frozen lake to enjoy the stillness of the surrounding wilderness.
Then there are the quieter experiences. Sitting beside a roaring fire in a traditional log cabin, enjoying a warming sauna before stepping outside into the cold, or watching snow fall through the windows as dinner is prepared by a private chef.
These are some of the moments that make winter travel in the Nordics so memorable.
Snowy Days and Northern Lights Nights
While the first snow is an exciting milestone, the Northern Lights season is already well underway.
As the evenings grow darker, opportunities to see the Aurora increase, and the arrival of snow adds another dimension to the experience.
There is nothing quite like standing outside on a cold winter evening, wrapped in warm clothing, watching the Northern Lights move across the sky while the snow beneath your feet reflects their green glow.
Across Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, the winter months offer incredible opportunities to combine Northern Lights viewing with Arctic adventures, luxurious accommodation and memorable experiences.
From remote wilderness lodges and traditional log cabins to glass roofed accommodation in Finland, winter transforms the landscapes and brings a completely different perspective to the places we know so well.
Why the First Snow Matters So Much to Our Team
At Off The Map Travel, the Nordics aren’t simply destinations we sell. They are home to many of our team members, and we experience the changing seasons first hand.
We know the excitement of that first snowfall, the preparations that take place before winter, and the anticipation of welcoming travellers to experience this remarkable part of the world.
Our local guides, accommodation partners and activity providers are preparing for another busy season, checking equipment, planning experiences and getting everything ready for the months ahead.
Having our team living and working in the Nordics means we can see these changes as they happen, share the excitement and use that local knowledge when planning your holiday.
The first snow in Boden might not last, and there will be plenty more to come over the next few months, but for us, today marks another little milestone in the journey towards winter.
The snow has started falling, the Arctic winter is getting closer, and we couldn’t be more excited!
