Discover Ytri Island Retreat on Norway’s remote Træna islands, with dramatic sea views, exceptional dining and authentic Arctic adventures.
Ytri Retreat

Why Stay at Ytri Island Retreat?
Far out in the Norwegian Sea, where dramatic mountain peaks rise above the Atlantic and the rhythm of life is shaped by the weather, Ytri Island Retreat offers one of Norway’s most extraordinary places to stay. Located in the remote Træna Archipelago, this intimate island retreat brings together contemporary Nordic architecture, exceptional local food and the freedom to experience a quieter side of Arctic Norway.
Designed by Norwegian architects Vardehaugen, Ytri takes inspiration from the traditional fishing communities that have occupied these islands for generations. Its distinctive buildings sit naturally within the rugged coastal landscape, with carefully considered interiors, natural materials and expansive windows framing views of the sea, mountains and ever changing Arctic light.
Rooms and suites offer a peaceful place to retreat after days spent exploring the islands, while the separate House by the Sea accommodation provides an even closer connection to the surrounding landscape. Choose from beautifully designed suites, intimate two storey towers or a private cabin overlooking the water.
Food is an important part of the Ytri experience. The hotel’s restaurant celebrates the rich culinary traditions of the Norwegian coast, with freshly caught seafood, seasonal ingredients and carefully prepared dishes inspired by the surrounding ocean. For something particularly special, enjoy the Chef’s Table, where an extended tasting menu brings the flavours of Træna to life.
Wellness is equally connected to nature. Warm up in the wood fired sauna, experience the invigorating contrast of the cold sea or simply spend time watching the changing weather from the comfort of the hotel.
Whether you’re visiting beneath the Midnight Sun, exploring the islands during autumn or hoping to see the Northern Lights during winter, Ytri offers an unforgettable opportunity to discover a remote and beautiful part of Norway.
Itinerary Inspiration
Wake to the sound of the sea and enjoy breakfast overlooking the dramatic mountains of the Træna Archipelago. With your private guide, spend the morning exploring the island’s small fishing communities, learning about the generations who have lived and worked along this remote stretch of Norway’s coastline.
Head out onto the water for a guided boat excursion between the islands, passing towering cliffs, sheltered coves and traditional fishing settlements. Keep watch for seabirds and marine wildlife as you discover the remarkable landscapes that make this archipelago so distinctive.
Return to Ytri for a leisurely afternoon, perhaps enjoying the wood fired sauna before cooling off in the fresh Arctic air. Alternatively, explore the island on foot, following coastal paths and discovering viewpoints overlooking the Norwegian Sea.
As evening approaches, enjoy an exceptional dining experience inspired by the day’s catch and the seasonal ingredients of Northern Norway. The hotel’s Chef’s Table offers an opportunity to explore the region’s culinary heritage through a carefully prepared tasting menu.
Where is Ytri Island Retreat?
Ytri Island Retreat is located on Træna, a remote archipelago approximately 60 kilometres off the Helgeland coast in Northern Norway, close to the Arctic Circle.
The archipelago consists of 477 islands, islets and skerries, surrounded by the Norwegian Sea and characterised by dramatic mountain formations, traditional fishing communities and extraordinary coastal scenery.
The hotel is situated in a sheltered harbour on the island of Husøya, with views towards the surrounding mountains and open ocean.
Reaching Ytri is part of the experience. Your journey can be arranged through the Norwegian coastal region, with onward travel by boat to Træna. The journey offers an opportunity to appreciate the scale and beauty of Norway’s northern coastline before arriving at this remarkable island retreat.
Despite its remote location, Ytri provides a wonderfully comfortable base for exploring the islands, discovering local traditions and experiencing the changing seasons of Arctic Norway.
During summer, the Midnight Sun brings long evenings when the landscape is illuminated by soft Arctic light, creating wonderful opportunities for photography, hiking and exploring the islands.
In autumn and winter, the atmosphere changes completely. Watch powerful Atlantic weather move across the horizon, enjoy the warmth of the hotel and, when skies are clear and conditions favourable, look out for the Northern Lights above the surrounding mountains.
Every stay can be designed around your interests, combining extraordinary coastal scenery, local culture, exceptional dining and time to enjoy one of Norway’s most secluded island destinations.

At Havhotellet, every stay is shaped by sea air, sky and natural beauty. We did! Everything was truly wonderful! I think the Holman Husky Lodge was our favourite place. Beautiful accommodations, but best of all, wonderful people! Everyone was so friendly and accommodating, excellent food, we really enjoyed our time there. We also greatly enjoyed Bergen! Opus XVI was beautiful and we loved being able to walk to restaurants and bars and take in the sights. All of our drivers were punctual and friendly. The itinerary was full but not overfull.
Thank you so much! It was an epic trip, we are taking home wonderful memories!
We really enjoyed our Norwegian adventure despite the -22 days! Unfortunately no real experience of viewing the Lights but we did capture a couple of images on our last night – too much cloud otherwise so lots of snow. We really enjoyed the husky lodge – not at all what we had tentatively imagined. Thanks for your assistance, maybe next time we will see the Lights in all their glory.
Well-organized trip to Norway and Svalbard with great accommodations and activities. Gwen was communicative and responsive to requests. Highly recommend!
Exceptional service throughout the entire planning and booking process – travel agencies don’t get any better than this. A brilliant, seamless experience matched by the holiday experience itself. Would recommend ‘Off the Map Travel’ to anyone considering booking for a Nordic experience ‘par excellence’.
Amy was a great help with planning this trip. Our trip turned out amazing. I also was very grateful for Off the Map’s Front Desk service, which promptly handled an on the spot issue we had.
We originally hired Off the Map Travel in 2020 to set up a trip to see the Northern Lights. That didn’t happen, thanks to COVID. But, we persisted and in March of 2023, we took a 16-day trip that included both Iceland and Norway. IT WAS MAGICAL! Off the Map took care of everything! We were pampered at every stage of our trip. The people they hired and the activities they planned added up to a trip that will set the standard for any we’ll ever take in the future. Alex and his team were fabulous! We recommend them without restraint!
My family and I traveled to Sweden to see The Northern Lights in March of 2023. From the planning process to every detail of the trip, I could not have been more pleased with our experience. Alex was exceptional to work with. His guidance on the time of year, where to stay, activities to do and how to get to and from everything was spot on. I have never used a tour company before but thought a trip of this kind would be easier with some help. I am so glad that I did. The entire week was seamless and completely stress-free, allowing us to truly enjoy Sweden and our time together as a family. I will be recommending Off The Map travel to friends and family and will certainly be using them myself again in the future.
We – the whole family – loved the whole journey!!
The accommodations, the activities and especially the great people – thank you very much for this fantastic organisation !!!
Arctic Retreat was simply magical. Graham and his team were superb. Their entire focus was on ensuring we had an outstanding experience. The accommodation, setting and food were all excellent. The team, experienced professionals, each brought their own personal touch and local nuance. It was faultless. The dog sledging trip directly from Arctic Retreat was also superb. We would return to Arctic Retreat in a heartbeat.
Amy planned a fantastic trip! Everything was very well-thought out. All transfers went smoothly, accommodations were amazing, great restaurant recommendations and the tours were once-in-a-lifetime, can’t book it yourself off the internet experiences. The guides were all fantastic. Communications were prompt and everything worked exactly the way it was supposed to. What a pleasure! Already working on our next trip.
What an amazing trip we are having. It is incredible. Many many thanks for arranging such an incredible trip.
Off the Map Travel was great! Alex helped us plan the most amazing 10 day honeymoon to Iceland. He gave us great recommendations and was so patient with us during the planning process!
