Making Lapland Holidays Even Easier

For anyone dreaming of snow covered forests, cosy cabins, husky sledding and the Northern Lights, travelling to Lapland from the UK has just become even more convenient. British Airways is expanding its direct services from London Gatwick, making it easier than ever to reach one of Europe’s most magical winter destinations.

The airline has already seen strong demand for its direct route to Ivalo in Finnish Lapland, which launched as its first scheduled service to Finland from Gatwick. Building on that success, British Airways has now announced a new direct route to Rovaniemi, giving travellers another gateway into the Arctic for the 2026 winter season.

For travellers looking to maximise their time in Lapland, these direct flights are welcome news. Rather than navigating connecting flights through Helsinki or other European hubs, passengers can fly straight from Gatwick and arrive in the heart of Finnish Lapland in around four hours, ready to begin their Arctic adventure.

Two Gateways to Finnish Lapland

Each airport offers something slightly different, making it easier to choose the right destination depending on the type of holiday you are planning.

Ivalo sits deep within the far north of Finnish Lapland, surrounded by vast wilderness, frozen lakes and national parks. It is the perfect starting point for travellers seeking peaceful luxury lodges, authentic Sámi culture and some of Europe’s best Northern Lights viewing. Destinations such as Saariselkä, Inari and Nellim are all easily reached from Ivalo Airport.

Rovaniemi, meanwhile, is famous as the official hometown of Santa Claus. It is particularly popular with families during the festive season, offering Santa experiences alongside winter activities including reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobiling and husky safaris. The new British Airways service begins in early December and operates twice weekly throughout the Christmas period.

More Time in the Arctic

One of the biggest advantages of direct flights is simple. You spend less time travelling and more time enjoying everything Lapland has to offer.

Instead of losing valuable holiday time changing aircraft, collecting luggage and waiting for onward connections, you can arrive refreshed and begin exploring almost immediately. Whether your plans include relaxing in a glass roof cabin beneath the Northern Lights, enjoying a traditional Finnish sauna followed by a dip in the snow, or setting out on a husky sled adventure, every extra hour in Lapland is worthwhile.

For many travellers, particularly families with children or those planning shorter winter breaks, direct flights remove much of the stress that can come with long journeys.

A Growing Interest in Lapland

The expansion of direct services reflects the continuing popularity of Lapland as a winter destination. Once considered somewhere people visited only to meet Santa, the region now attracts couples, honeymooners, photographers, wellness travellers and adventure seekers alike.

Luxury accommodation has also transformed the visitor experience. Boutique wilderness hotels, private log cabins, floating saunas and glass roof suites now sit alongside authentic Arctic experiences, creating holidays that combine adventure with comfort.

The Northern Lights remain one of the biggest attractions. Finnish Lapland lies beneath the Aurora Oval, giving visitors excellent opportunities to witness the spectacular natural display throughout the winter months when skies are dark and conditions are favourable.

Why This Matters for UK Travellers

For UK travellers, easier access often makes all the difference when choosing a winter holiday. Direct flights simplify planning, reduce travel time and make destinations such as Finnish Lapland far more accessible than they once were.

Whether you are planning a festive family break, a romantic escape beneath the Northern Lights or an unforgettable Arctic adventure, British Airways’ growing Lapland network gives travellers more flexibility than ever before.

With direct flights now available from London Gatwick to both Ivalo and Rovaniemi, reaching the snow covered landscapes of Finnish Lapland has never been easier. For anyone considering an Arctic holiday this winter, the journey is now almost as effortless as the destination itself.
